Advocacy

Working in consultation with our members, the History Council of New South Wales provides a voice for history. It responds to the history interests of the broader community, speaking and acting authoritatively on its behalf.

Creating opportunities for discussion and debate, the Council takes a stand on relevant social and political issues. The Council regularly makes submissions regarding legislative changes and supports member organisations on issues that affect the practice and writing of history.

The following key issues/areas are monitored as watching briefs:

history curriculum in the education sector;
history at the tertiary level;
arts funding, in particular cultural institutions;
digital archives and digitisation of records;
copyright;
legislative issues;
censorship and privacy;
academic freedom;
Indigenous issues; and
heritage.
